Air India Signs Purchase Agreements for 470 Aircraft from Airbus and Boeing

Air India, a global airline owned by Tata Group, has taken a significant step in its fleet expansion program by signing purchase agreements with Airbus and Boeing. The deal, announced at the Paris Air Show, includes the acquisition of 470 aircraft with a total value of USD 70 billion based on list prices as part of Air India’s fleet expansion program announced in February.Also Read: Air India Signs Agreements to Acquire AirAsia India; To Be Merged With Air India ExpressWidebody and Narrowbody Aircraft OrdersThe purchase agreements cover a wide range of aircraft models. Air India’s firm orders include 34 A350-1000 and six A350-900 from Airbus, along with 20 Boeing 787 Dreamliners and 10 Boeing 777X widebody aircraft. Additionally, the airline has ordered 140 Airbus A320neo, 70 Airbus A321neo, and 190 Boeing 737MAX narrowbody aircraft.N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons and Air India, expressed his optimism about the fleet expansion. “This landmark step further positions Air India for long-term growth and success that, we have every hope, will come together to represent the best of modern aviation to the world.”Campbell Wilson, CEO and MD of Air India, highlighted the airline’s commitment to operating advanced and fuel-efficient aircraft. He stated, “Our ambitious fleet renewal and expansion programme will see Air India operate the most advanced and fuel-efficient aircraft across our route network within five years. According to the statement, these partners will provide a range of solutions, including parts and maintenance provisioning, digital applications, and modification services.Delivery Schedule and Leased AircraftThe delivery of the new aircraft will commence later this year, with the majority of the order expected to arrive from mid-2025 onwards.
