Air New Zealand Enhances Hamilton–Christchurch Route...

Air New Zealand is set to strengthen regional connectivity by introducing jet services on the Hamilton–Christchurch route starting September 18.

For the first time in 25 years, the airline will operate select flights on this route using a 171-seat Airbus A320. The domestic route has traditionally been supported by the carrier’s turboprop fleet.

This move marks a significant milestone in bringing domestic jet services back to Hamilton, boosting travel options for passengers.

Complementing Existing ATR Operations

The jet services will complement the airline’s existing ATR 72 turboprop flights. This ensures travelers have a range of choices throughout the day.

With the addition of approximately 25,000 seats annually, the route will cater to growing demand. The A320 jets will primarily serve peak travel times, benefiting business and leisure travelers, as well as those connecting to other destinations.

Greg Foran, Air New Zealand Chief Executive Officer, emphasized the airline’s commitment to improving connectivity between New Zealand’s North and South Islands.

“The Hamilton–Christchurch route is one of our strongest regional markets, showing rapid growth,” Foran said. “Introducing jet services reflects this demand, offering more seats and greater convenience for our customers.”

Airbus A320 Operations

The Air New Zealand Airbus A320 single-aisle jets provide a faster and more spacious travel experience, ideal for those heading to business meetings, events, or exploring the scenic South Island.

Meanwhile, the ATR turboprops will continue to offer flexibility with multiple daily flights. To support this change, two ATR aircraft previously used on this route will be redeployed to other regional routes. This will enhance the airline’s overall network capacity and resilience.

Foran highlighted that this initiative is more than just adding a new aircraft. “This is our second jet service launch on a regional route. It follows the successful Invercargill–Auckland jet service in 2019,” he said.

“Our goal is to foster growth by improving access for communities, boosting tourism, and supporting trade. It’s a responsibility we take seriously, and we’re excited to deliver on this commitment.”

A Boost for Waikato Region

Mark Morgan, Chief Executive of Waikato Regional Airport, welcomed the return of jet services to Hamilton. “This is fantastic for the Waikato region and a strong endorsement of Hamilton as a key regional hub,” Morgan said.

“Partnering with Air New Zealand to connect our community to the South Island is a significant step forward for the region.”

This development underscores Air New Zealand’s dedication to meeting customer needs while supporting regional growth and connectivity across New Zealand.
