Air Niugini, Papua New Guinea’s national airline, has strengthened its partnership with Airbus by ordering two additional A220-100 aircraft.
This follows a 2023 order for six A220s and includes lease agreements for three A220-300s from Azorra, a U.S.-based lessor.
The announcement came as the airline’s first A220 entered final assembly at Airbus’ facility in Mirabel, Canada.
Boosting the Regional Fleet
Gary Seddon, Air Niugini’s CEO, highlighted the A220’s role in the airline’s future. “The A220 will be the backbone of our domestic and regional fleet, driving economic growth in Papua New Guinea. With strong growth forecasts, we’ve increased our order for this fuel-efficient aircraft, bringing new levels of efficiency and passenger comfort to our operations.”
Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Airbus’ EVP of Sales for Commercial Aircraft, praised the repeat order. “Air Niugini’s second A220 order underscores our commitment to supporting their fleet renewal.”
“The A220 is the most efficient aircraft in its class, offering a spacious cabin and the range to reach any destination in their network non-stop.”

Airbus A220
The A220 stands out as the most advanced airliner in its category. It carries 100 to 160 passengers on flights up to 3,600 nautical miles (6,700 km). The A220-100 serves the 100-135 seat market, while the A220-300 caters to 120-160 seats, depending on configuration.
Powered by Pratt & Whitney’s GTF™ engines, the A220 cuts fuel use and carbon emissions. A reduction of 25% per seat is achievable, compared to older aircraft. It can also operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Airbus is aiming for 100% SAF compatibility across its commercial range by 2030.
As of April 2025, Airbus has secured over 900 A220 orders from more than 30 customers, with over 410 delivered.
The aircraft serves 24 operators worldwide, flying over 1,600 routes to more than 470 destinations, solidifying its dominance in the small single-aisle market.

Conclusion
This expansion aligns with Air Niugini’s strategy to modernize its fleet, enhance connectivity, and support Papua New Guinea’s economic development.
The A220’s efficiency and range make it ideal for the airline’s diverse network, ensuring reliable service across domestic and regional routes.
With a focus on sustainability and passenger comfort, Air Niugini is poised to elevate its operations while contributing to a greener aviation future.
