In the foothills of the Swiss Alps, on the shores of Lake Constance, a new entrant to the health and wellness world is quietly drawing attention. Opened in early 2025, BUFF Medical Resort describes itself as a “medical-first” facility – an institution that prioritises outcomes over aesthetics, and physiology over indulgence.
That alone sets it apart in a market often saturated with wellness clichés. But what makes BUFF particularly interesting is its founder, Hans-Jürg Buff, a hospitality veteran with a deep, and at times obsessive, interest in health and longevity. This isn’t a hotel with a fancy gym and spa that is calling itself a ‘wellness retreat’. It’s a purpose-built, medically led operation designed from the ground up to deliver measurable, lasting improvements in health.
“I am 100% certain this resort has the best facilities and equipment in the world,” Buff told us on our recent visit. And while that may read as a bold statement, the infrastructure suggests he might be right.
Medicine First, Luxury Second

The resort’s guiding principle is deceptively simple: extend health span, not just lifespan. Dr. Claas Hohmann, BUFF’s medical director, explains: “It’s not about how long you live. It’s about how long you can live well – mobile, autonomous, and mentally sharp.”
To that end, guests begin their stay with a full battery of tests. This includes metabolic diagnostics, gait analysis, gut health screenings, and cardiovascular imaging via a state-of-the-art MRI scanner – equipment on par with or superior to what one might find in a brand-new top-tier hospital. One cardiologist claimed their latest MRI machine could project heart health up to 20 years into the future.
The data collected is then used to build a tailored programme that may include therapeutic fasting, postural correction, altitude acclimatisation, silent eating protocols, and even instruction on how to chew food correctly – based on principles established by early 20th-century health pioneer Dr. F.X. Mayr. Each recommendation is designed to be practical and sustainable, rather than performative.
A Holistic But Structured Approach

What’s notable is the lack of any singular doctrine. BUFF’s methodology draws from both Western clinical practice and traditional Eastern disciplines. Ayurvedic therapies, Chinese medicine, nutritional science, and regenerative treatments are integrated into individual plans. The mix is intentionally eclectic, but always data-informed.
That said, this is not a place to coast through a “detox” on juices and massages. While there are spa elements – massages, saunas, a well-appointed indoor-outdoor pool – these are almost secondary. Guests are expected to engage, reflect, and, occasionally, be uncomfortable. The ethos is one of discipline – not denial, but a kind of recalibration for those who are used to living in a society designed for convenience.
BUFF’s clientele are mostly international, affluent, and health-literate. Many arrive with specific goals, from cardiovascular recalibration to preparing for demanding physical pursuits later in life. Some use it as a preventative check-in; others see it as a reset following periods of high stress or health neglect.
A Seamless Journey

Getting to BUFF Medical Resort is a reminder that efficiency and luxury needn’t be mutually exclusive. Our journey began at Biggin Hill Airport, just outside London, where a Challenger 3500 awaited. The cabin was quiet, modern, and thoughtfully stocked with nutrient-rich breakfast options, designed to complement the retreat’s health-focused ethos before we even touched down.
A little under 70 minutes later, we landed at Friedrichshafen Airport – a small, efficient hub on the German side of Lake Constance. On the tarmac, a private Bentley from the resort was waiting. We were whisked onto a nearby ferry that crossed the lake, minutes later, we arrived directly at the property’s entrance.
Door to door, the entire journey took just over three hours, moving from the intensity of London’s city pace to the quiet, clinical calm of BUFF – without a single queue, delay or compromise in comfort.
Facilities and Environment

Suites are minimalist but warm, using Swiss pine and local materials. Most face south, with balconies or terraces and large soaking tubs oriented towards natural views. The air in some rooms is calibrated using altitude simulation technology, prompting metabolic function to increase during sleep – a feature borrowed from elite sports science.
The fitness centre features Technogym’s latest equipment, while movement labs offer advanced diagnostics on biomechanics. Nutrition is precise, seasonal, and quietly sophisticated meals are served in a dining room that favours silence over spectacle, allowing guests to focus on their food and digestion.
One of the most unique features of the BUFF Medical Resort is the ability to adjust the altitude in your room to simulate conditions found in the foothills of the Himalayas. This artificial high-altitude climate, which can replicate altitudes of up to 3,000 metres, offers a range of health benefits that directly enhance your well-being.
The reduced oxygen levels naturally optimize oxygen uptake, stimulating the production of red blood cells, which in turn improves oxygen supply to your tissues and organs. The effects are tangible: enhanced physical performance, increased energy levels, and a metabolism that burns fat more efficiently. By incorporating this altitude simulation technology into your environment, the resort takes full advantage of scientifically-backed methods to accelerate the benefits of your health programme, pushing your body to adapt and thrive in ways that conventional luxury stays simply cannot replicate.
Beyond the physical infrastructure, the resort’s sensory environment is deliberately curated to encourage stillness and focus. Lighting is soft and adaptive, shifting with the time of day to support natural circadian rhythms. Acoustic design plays a key role as well—soundproofing ensures that even in communal areas, there’s a sense of privacy and calm. Rooms are scent-neutral, save for the occasional hint of stone pine, known for its calming and anti-inflammatory properties.
Beyond Spa Culture

BUFF is part of a broader shift among ultra-premium wellness destinations: a move away from aesthetic spa culture toward evidence-based health transformation. It shares more DNA with a preventive clinic than with a luxury resort, though it borrows the discretion, comfort and service levels of the latter.
Pricing is reflective of its ambition, with programmes typically running over one to three weeks. But for guests who are prepared to participate fully, and who are open to having their assumptions challenged, it offers something that many high-end retreats promise but rarely deliver: genuine change.
